SKyPAC and the Kentucky Blues Society visited the Boys & Girls Club of Bowling Green for a special summer arts program focused on sharing the history of Kentucky Blues music with a group of 30 youth participants.
Kentucky Blues Society musicians Kenny Lee (keyboard and lead vocals), “Hillbilly Jim” Morris (electric guitar) and Lee Hammer (harmonica) lead the program sharing their musical talents, educating the group through song on Kentucky’s role in blues music and the different styles and rhythms of the blues. Making this program special, the Kentucky Blues Society and SKyPAC provide each participant with their own harmonica. The program concluded with the youth learning how to care for their harmonicas, play a few chords and compose a blues song together.
Boys & Girls Club of Bowling Green sample lyric:
“It’s so hot outside, I miss my dog by my side.
We’re at the Boys and Girls Club playing the blues,
down on Gordon Avenue!”
This program, an extension of the Blues Society’s “Blues in Schools” program, was made possible through the sales of the Boys & Girls Club of Bowling Green’s hand-made gingerbread man ornament sales at SKyPAC’s inaugural Gingerbread Homes for the Arts fundraising in November last year.
